Secondary Schools Athletic Trainers' Committee

Spotlight on Atheltic Training Excellence

Mission Statement

"The Mission of SWATA SSATC is to enhance the quality of health care and public awareness of the athletic training profession in the secondary school setting."

Goals

  • Work cooperatively with other groups associated with the healthcare of secondary school aged athletes
  • Provide education to both school administrators and community members on the need for athletic trainers in all secondary school settings in Arkansas and Texas
  • Establish methods for increasing public awareness about athletic trainers by developing materials for distribution to physicians, administrators, and parents highlighting educational background, licensing/certification procedures, and CEU requirements for the athletic trainer
  • Continue to gather data concerning the dynamic work environment of the secondary school athletic training community
  • Provide awareness for the marketable qualifications for athletic trainers to secure employment in the secondary school setting

Teaching Credential recommended by SSATC and ATSA

This joint statement between the District Six Athletic Trainers' Students' Association (ATSA) and the SWATA Secondary School Athletic Training Committee recommends teacher credentialing for prospective athletic training students.

Based on trends in the present job market, both within District Six and nationally, it is the recommendation of both the District Six ATSA and the SWATA SSATC that prospective athletic training students obtain a teaching credential at either the undergraduate or graduate level to enhance their marketability.

SSATC Recommends Policy for Injuries Incurred Outside of School Hours

The Southwest Athletic Trainers Association Secondary Schools Athletic Trainers Committee recommends that the secondary school Athletic Trainer develop a policy relating to the treatment of student-athletic injuries resulting outside of UIL or AHSAA sanctioned activities. The policy should take into account specific liability limitations, scope of practice for Athletic Training, and existing local policies.
